It’s probably obvious that we are unabashed Hitchcock fans. He’s just brilliant! Flawed, but brilliant.

This movie, based on Stephen Rebello’s book Hitchcock and the Making of Psycho, focusses on the 18 months surrounding Hitchcock’s acquiring of the rights of Robert Bloch’s gothic horror novel and the development of it into the cult movie it became. It also centres on Hitchcock’s relationship with his wife and partner, Alma, arguably the power behind the throne.

Anthony Hopkins makes an interesting Hitchcock, although, for me, he does seem quite monstrous in his makeup, which regretfully led to flashbacks of Hannibal. Helen Mirren is excellent as Alma and the supporting cast, including the usually irritating Scarlett Johansson as Janet Leigh, is entertaining.

It’s definitely worth seeing if you’re a Hitchcock fan, although personally Terry Johnson’s play Hitchcock Blonde is far more interesting…
