Fireproof by Alex Kava

This is temporary, she told herself. She was going to be okay. How could she expect to get shot in the head and bounce back?”

I love Maggie O’Dell books. I have since I stumbled across A Perfect Evil in a bookshop oh so many years ago. O’Dell is a disfunctional but charismatic protagonist – strong, accomplished, very talented, but also socially challenged and surrounded by people who seem to care about her no matter what she does. She is brilliant and also headstrong and in this she is reminiscent of Temperance Brennan, Kay Scarpetta and even JD Robb’s Eve Dallas.

This book, Fireproof, is the 10th O’Dell book and features all the familiar characters, from RJ Tully and Gwen Patterson to Julia Racine. It has O’Dell dealing with a series of fires in Washington, DC, while tackling a reporter desperate to make his big break, even if it puts O’Dell in danger.

Brilliant stuff. Alex Kava at her the top of her game.
