A Poet to His Beloved, The Early Love Poems of WB Yeats
EDITOR’S CHOICE
When you are old and grey and full of sleep
And nodding by the fire take down this book
And slowly read, and dream of the soft look
Your eyes had once, and of their shadows deep…”
– ‘When you are old’
This beautiful little volume features 41 of WB Yeats’ greatest love poems, including a personal favourite ‘When you are old’. In his youth, Yeats was particularly influenced by the idea of ‘the old high way of love’ or romantic love. Yeats fell in love with nationalist Maude gonne, when he was 23, and she became the object of his great passion, although it was one-sided. Much of this is reflected in his early poetry.
A lovely edition.
